Kleopatra desktop app: the key manager listing private keys with fingerprint, algorithm and the exported public key

The desktop app on macOS - key manager, encryption tools and password vault in one window.

Full PGP toolbox

Generate RSA 4096 or Curve25519 key pairs, import existing keys, encrypt, decrypt, sign and verify - the complete OpenPGP workflow in one app.

Encrypted sync across devices

Optionally sync your keys and passwords across devices. Everything is encrypted with AES-256 on your device before upload - the server never sees plaintext.

Offline & private by design

The desktop app works fully offline. No telemetry on your keys, no account required, and the code is open source and auditable.

Same app everywhere

Desktop on Windows and macOS, browser on everything else - one interface, one key format, compatible with GPG, ProtonMail and Thunderbird.

A password manager built in

Keep your logins next to your keys, with a strength meter and a generator offering six patterns. Entries live on your device and, with sync enabled, travel between your machines encrypted with AES-256 - the server only ever stores ciphertext.

Encrypt a message in seconds

Pick the recipient's public key, write your message, hit Encrypt. Out comes a PGP block you can paste into any chat or email - signed with your own key, so they can prove it really came from you. Nothing leaves the device in readable form.

Open what you receive, verified

Paste the block someone sends you. Your private key unlocks it locally and the signature is checked automatically against the public keys you hold - the green banner confirms who wrote it and that not a character was altered.

The Kleopatra desktop app brings the full browser experience to your computer as a native application: the same key manager, the same encrypt / decrypt / sign tools, and the same password manager - working entirely offline. Installers are served directly from our own infrastructure, so the download starts immediately.

Looking for the classic Windows Kleopatra that ships with Gpg4win? That is a different, unrelated project by the GnuPG team, available at gpg4win.org. Both applications speak the same OpenPGP standard, so keys move freely between them - but Kleopatra.app also runs on macOS and in any modern browser, with no installation required.

Prefer not to install anything? The complete app runs in your browser too: open Kleopatra in your browser - same features, nothing sent to any server.

Your privacy is guaranteed by design

Every cryptographic operation runs on your device. Keys and passwords stay local; with sync enabled they are encrypted with AES-256 before leaving your machine. The code is open source - you can verify every claim yourself.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Kleopatra desktop app free?

Yes. The Kleopatra desktop app is completely free for Windows and macOS, just like the browser version. No account is required to use it.

What is the difference between the desktop app and the browser version?

Both offer the same PGP features: key generation, import, encryption, decryption and signing. The desktop app runs fully offline as a native application and adds a first-class experience for the optional encrypted sync, so your keys follow you across devices.

Which operating systems are supported?

Native installers are available for macOS (Apple Silicon .dmg) and Windows (.exe installer). On Linux or any other OS, the browser version at kleopatra.app offers the same functionality with no installation.

Is this the same Kleopatra as Gpg4win?

No. Gpg4win's Kleopatra is the classic Windows key manager maintained by the GnuPG project. Kleopatra.app is an independent, open-source PGP application built on OpenPGP.js - same OpenPGP standard and compatible keys, with a modern interface for Windows, macOS and the browser.

Are my keys and passwords uploaded anywhere?

No. All cryptography runs on your device. If you enable the optional sync, your vault is encrypted with AES-256 on your device before upload - the server only ever stores ciphertext it cannot read.
